Want to upgrade your home without the upfront cost? This blog dives into CleanBC’s Energy Savings Program, which offers up to 100% coverage on energy-efficient home upgrades for income-qualified BC residents. Learn who’s eligible, how to apply, and how this program can benefit renters and homeowners alike.
Before we jump in, let’s break down what a rebate is... Think of it like a little reward for making a smart purchase! You spend money on an eligible purchase, and later, you get some of that money back.
For example, imagine you buy an apple for $1. If there’s a 10% rebate, you’ll get 10 cents back—so in the end, that apple only cost you 90 cents.
Rebates are a great way to save money, but they don’t just appear out of nowhere. You have to apply for them, and there are usually rules to determine who qualifies. Governments often offer rebates on products that are useful or necessary.
In this post, we’re focusing on energy efficiency rebates—basically, money you can get back on things like heat pumps, water heaters, and other appliances that help you use less energy at home.
Now that you’ve got the rebate basics down, you might be wondering:
👉 Where do I start? 👉 What rebates are out there? 👉 Do I qualify?
Good news! If you live in B.C., there’s a lot of financial support available. But we also know that figuring out the details can be tricky. That’s why we’ve teamed up with CleanBC to answer three common questions about rebates and how CleanBC can help you save.
What is the Energy Savings Program?
CleanBC’s Energy Savings Program is part of their Better Homes initiative—a B.C. government program that helps homeowners save energy and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions with rebates and support.
This specific program is designed for low- to medium-income households, making energy-efficient home upgrades more affordable.
How much can you save? Well, depending on your income, you could get up to 100% of the costs covered for things like heat pumps, insulation, and other energy-saving improvements. And good news for renters—you can also benefit from this program, as long as your landlord is on board.
Sounds pretty great, right? Let’s take a closer look at how it all works!
Your eligibility depends on a few key factors:
1️⃣ Your Household Income & Family Size
CleanBC sorts income into three levels, with Level 1 being the lowest. The lower your income level, the higher your qualified rebate amount. Level 1 applicants typically get the most support, while Level 3 applicants qualify for fewer rebates.
See the income qualification table below:
2️⃣ Your Home Must Be Eligible
✔️ Your home must be your primary residence and at least 12 months old.
✔️ If you’re applying under Income Level 1 or 2, your home’s assessed value must be $1,230,000 or less (based on a BC assessment).
✔️Your home must be primarily heated by natural gas, propane, oil, electricity, wood, or other solid fuels.
3️⃣ Your Utility & Building Type Must Qualify
✔️ You must have an active utility account in your name with a municipal utility, FortisBC, or BC Hydro.
✔️ Your home must be one of the following:
Single-family home
Permanently fixed mobile home
Secondary suite, duplex, triplex, or rowhouse (as long as it has its own utility meter)
Note: Your home must be heated by electricity, wood, natural gas, propane, or oil.
4️⃣ Renters Qualify Too!
You can apply for rebates with your landlord’s approval—just make sure to attach the landlord consent form to your application.
5️⃣ Your Upgrades Must Meet the Program Rules
✔️Upgrades must be installed by a registered contractor in the program.
✔️ Your contractor must follow all rebate requirements for the installation.
